Dining Table

23x28 inch
photo transfer and oil on canvas
2022

The space where I eat my meals with my family is not simply a place to satisfy my most basic human need, i.e., hunger. Rather, it is a time where my family can exchange stories about what happened during our days and engage in lighthearted arguments about a variety of topics. The table shows the reality of what it means to me to be a family. Beneath the surface level of this painting, I wanted to express that not every talk is positive and filled with joy and sometimes we walk away with tears in ours, thus, I utilized blue tones throughout the piece to signal a melancholic feeling. Furthermore, this table is set in front of a wall proudly showcasing different memories of my family members. I wanted to materialize the accumulated memories of my family, so I chose to fill most empty spaces with photos. These photos, taken in various places of my past, all reflect my childhood, my adolescence, my brother, my parents, and an accumulation of everything that we have been through.
