Afterimage refers to an image in which one of art's most foundational senses, vision, is muted, yet continues to exist despite being stifled. This piece was inspired after thinking about how different events and situations can leave lasting imprints on an individual’s mind despite these same individuals only having vague recollections of what the situation was. By utilizing lighting techniques, I wanted to create the dim silhouette of a branch as a metaphor to express the aforementioned insight. At first glance, the object may not be immediately recognized; however, once revealed, the image of a branch immediately comes to mind and we are able to see the branch despite its muted appearance in the piece. In many ways, this parallels how many individuals relate to some of their most important experiences. While we are most likely unable to recollect every single important experience in our lives, we are the living evidence that these situations once occurred.
